NHS fees are set by the government and cannot be adjusted.
NHS dental examinations are free in Scotland, but there are charges for x-rays and other diagnostic procedures that may be required at an initial examination.
If you pay for your dental treatment, you pay 80% of the treatment cost up to a maximum of £384 for a single course of treatment. The remainder is subsidised by the NHS. If your treatment plan exceeds a total of £660 then the dentist will have to seek prior approval from the NHS board to carry out the treatment.
Some patients are exempt from paying NHS charges.
Exemptions from paying for NHS dental treatment include:
Patients under 26 years of age
Universal Credit
Employment Support Allowance
Income based Job Seekers Allowance
Pension Credit
Pregnant, or mother of a child under 12 months old
